Choose 304 when the service stays genuinely mild: dry, indoor, or only lightly chloride-exposed. Choose 316L when chloride is part of the cleaning routine, atmosphere, or process stream. The molybdenum gap is small on paper and often decisive in service. If the application moves toward warm seawater or sustained chloride contact, stop comparing 304 and 316; review 2205 duplex.
